YMCA helps pack bags for Windham-Ashland-Jewett Students | Community Spirit
The Capital District YMCA’s Greene County branch recently helped organize a community effort to collect backpacks and school supplies for kids affected by Tropical Storms Irene and Lee.
Working with many local businesses, volunteers and community organizations, the Y was able to collect and fill 500 backpacks distributed to students in the Windham Ashland Jewett Central School District.
“The response was tremendous,” said Heather Bagshaw, Executive Director of the Greene County YMCA in a statement. “This project wouldn't have been successful without community support and dedication. I feel blessed to be a part of a great organization like the Capital District YMCA and to be working in a community where so many are dedicated to helping each other!”
Bags were delivered to Saint Mary’s Church on September 15 before classes began at the Windham-Ashland-Jewett Central School District on September 26.
The Capital District YMCA says that Delmar Pediatrics, Greeneville Girl Scouts, EmUrgentCare of Coxsackie, Flach Realty and Ford Lacy all helped make this effort possible.
