Local Fire Departments donate used turnout gear

Local Fire Departments donate used turnout gear

Area firefighters from nine different companies in three counties have donated used firefighting turnout gear to the International Fire Relief Mission, which will distribute the gear to other countries that cannot afford firefighting gear.

Firefighters in the United States must replace turnout gear every 10 years because of NFPA guidelines. In most instances the gear is still usable and the problem arises of how to dispose of the gear.

The Greenport Fire Department received information about the mission that takes in used gear and redistributes to less fortunate fire departments in other countries.

Columbia County fire departments that donated included Canaan, Copake,Chatham, Germantown, Greenport, Hillsdale and Livingston. Also contributing were departments from Earlton in Greene County and Middle Granville in Washington County.

The HELP program was created in 2011 to assist individuals who have never graduated college with up to 100 percent tuition reimbursement in exchange for maintaining good grades and fulfilling service requirements in one of New York’s volunteer fire companies.

There is no restriction on the type of academic classes that a volunteer may pursue. Eligible student/volunteers must maintain acceptable volunteer activity and training levels while attending school and fulfill a service requirement after they complete their course of study. They must attend the closest community college or one within a 50-mile radius of their residence.
