NY man sets mom's home on fire, commits suicide | News
ATHENS (AP) - Authorities say a 49-year-old man being evicted from his mother's Hudson Valley home set the house on fire before committing suicide by shooting himself at another family property.
Greene County Sheriff Greg Seeley says firefighters were called to the home in the town of Athens early Thursday morning. Seeley says the woman's son - Steve Svidro (SWEE'-droh) - had set the house on fire and then fled.
The woman, whose name hasn't been released, made it out safely.
Seeley says deputies found Svidro's body several hours later at a lake on the family's property about a mile from the home. Seeley says Svidro had shot himself in the head with a handgun.
Seeley told the Daily Freeman of Kingston that Svidro's mother had filed papers to have evicted from her home, which sustained heavy damage in the fire.
