HUDSON – Athens Girl Scout Troop 1819 recently visited the Columbia Greene Humane Society with a car load of donations.

The donations included dog and cat food, treats and other supplies.

They girls also donated $170 they had collected. 

Officials announce preservation of Hudson farms

 

TAGHKANIC, N.Y. (AP) - The push continues to preserve farms in the Hudson Valley.
 
Officials from valley conservation groups and government agencies are set to announce new actions to preserve prime agricultural land. Development has spread across the Hudson Valley in recent decades, putting more pressure on farmers.
 
The conservation group Scenic Hudson will announce the initiative Tuesday afternoon at a farm in Columbia County. They will be joined by representatives of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the Columbia Land Conservancy, the Dutchess Land Conservancy and Columbia County.

NY state proposes letting jails shut law libraries

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - New York corrections officials have proposed letting local jails across the state close law libraries used by inmates.

The state Commission of Correction says that could save each jail about $5,000 a year, though the 63 jails would still have to preserve prisoner access rights to legal materials.

Hannaford teams with TOMRA to help charities

Hannaford teams with TOMRA to help charities

 

ALBANY – Beginning on April 8, customers who shop at Hannaford Supermarkets will have the chance to give back to their community when recycling.

Customers who return deposit valued bottles and cans at Hannaford locations is New York will have the option to donate the money to local charities.

The first beneficiary will be the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation of Northeastern New York.

The program will be offered at 22 Hannaford store throughout the Capital Region and Hudson Valley.

Customers can participate by either dropping off their bottles to a Greenback staff member or by pressing the option on one of the TOMRA reverse vending machines.

The program runs through May 31.  

Aeschylus Unbound at Waldorf School

 

GHENT – On Friday, April 19, the world of Ancient Greece will come to life on stage at Hawthorne Valley Waldorf School.

Actors Laurie Portocarrero and Glen Williamson will perform Aeschylus Unbound, a play that spans the life of the first great playwright and the father of western drama.

The actors portray Aeschylus' tumultuous relationship with the high priestess of the temple of Demeter. Perception of the gods was fading, theater and democracy were just beginning and the future of Western civilization hung in the balance.  

The show is at 7 p.m. in the music room of the school. A suggested donation of $20-$35 is the admission fee.

ALBANY – Governor Cuomo is inviting all New Yorkers to their favorite state park or historic site on Saturday, May 4, a part of the Second Annual I Love My Park Day.

Volunteers who want to support clean-up and beautification efforts at sites across the state, including areas effected by recent disasters are encouraged to sign up.

“Last year, thousands of New Yorkers turned out to show their support for New York’s state parks and historic sites by volunteering at the first-ever I Love My Park Day,” Governor Cuomo said. “I am pleased to again invite New Yorkers to participate in this annual volunteer initiative to help clean and spruce up these great state assets which play a significant role in our tourism industry and economy. This year, there are especially worthwhile projects at facilities that experienced devastating damage from Superstorm Sandy last fall and can benefit greatly from the efforts of New Yorkers.”
